Title: That Stupid Notebook Movie
Author: averypartofme
Rating: T for swearing
Characters/Pairings: Matt/Caroline
Disclaimer: The Vampire Diaries belongs to L.J. Smith and Kevin Williamson and most definitely not me.
Warnings: Well, I made Matt swear a lot which may not be in canon character, but he's a teenage boy who's like bffs with Tyler Lockwood, so he probs does swear a lot. Spoilers for 1x12 - Unpleasantville.
Summary: And Caroline smiles at him and he smiles at her and in the back of his mind he’s thinking “This is like a goddamn Nicholas Sparks book, like that stupid Notebook movie with that hottie Rachel something” because Caroline made him watch it with her one night. A tag for the scene in Unpleasantville. You know the one, I hope.
Word Count: 595

He pulls his truck up to the side of the street, not even caring if the light is green or red or fucking chartreuse. He just hits the brakes and slams it into park and is hopping out before the truck is fully stationary. Caroline is already yelling at him, which he expected because, hello, he fucked up big time. And she’s throwing her hands out like she’s some sort of badass, ready to take on the world. But Matt knows her, has seen her at her most vulnerable, and those tears in her eyes are a complete contrast to the toughness she just projected at him.

Caroline is fucking pissed. He can see it in her face and her walk and the stiffness of her back and Matt is just, like, internally scared that he fucked up too much to fix it. So he does the one thing he knows will stop the tirade he can practically hear already. He grabs her face and pulls her close and kisses her, silencing the words that were already at the tip of her tongue. His fingers dig into her scalp at the back of her head and he knows she’s going to be pissed that he messed up her hair because “this took TWO HOURS, Matt!” But he doesn’t care because her forward momentum has pressed her body up against hers and, well, he’s been pressed up against her before, like that time he woke up in her bed and they were spooning and he made her promise she would never fucking tell anyone. But this, this is so much different because they’re so much more than friends now.

And he looks down at her and says the most fucking ridiculous thing he ever thought would come out of his mouth and he’s not even sure why he said it but sure enough “This is never going to work” slips out because he’s a giant douche bag. But thankfully, Caroline just smiles because of course she knows exactly what he means. Because she always has, even if he never really realized it.

He kisses her again, tightening his hold on the back of her neck and her arms come up around his waist to rest on his back. She’s warm and soft under his lips and this is nothing like Elena and why is he even comparing the two? His shirt bunches up under her hands as her lips part and it’s like he’s falling into heaven which is so sappy he almost has to laugh at himself. But he doesn’t of course because Caroline pressed up against him is worth a thousand sappy thoughts.

And when they finally pull apart after what feels like eighty seven glorious years, the light above them clicks and they’re bathed in a bright green glow like they’re aliens or something. And Caroline smiles at him and he smiles at her and in the back of his mind he’s thinking “This is like a goddamn Nicholas Sparks book, like that stupid Notebook movie with that hottie Rachel something” because Caroline made him watch it with her one night and now he'll never forget it.

But it doesn’t really matter how many overly romantic movies where the guy always gets the girl she makes him watch or how many girly chick lit books she has strewn around that she reads when he’s still there. No, all that matters is that he’s willing to give them a chance. And that she’s willing to forgive him for almost fucking up the one good thing he had left in his life.
